It’s 2012!

So I was browsing Facebook one fine day and a friend from college did this cool thing where every year she answered the same set of questions. I thought it was a mighty fine idea and decided to steal it :) . Thanks Leslie aka “Sista”!

1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?
Lost 40lbs, got a full time job, moved to Seattle, visited Orlando, parted ways with one dream (church career) to pursue another (technology career) and got my CCNA.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don’t really like making resolutions, I make life changes.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not anyone close this year.  Steve Jobs died though.

5. What countries did you visit?
Orlando was as far as I got this year.  Still need to get my passport.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
Even more drive to get to a healthy weight.

7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
October 3rd – First day at EMC Isilon
November 20th – Moved to Seattle

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Losing 40 lbs.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not sure if it’s a failure.. definitely a lesson though: Regaining ~15lbs after starting at Isilon.. still trying to get back in the groove of working out and eating healthy.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Wasn’t sick once all year (well anything more than 12 hours)

11. What was the best thing you bought?
This would be a hard one.. furniture for the apartment was nice for sure.  Also repurchased my laptop since my one I bought last year was stolen (among other things).

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Myself.. achieving some major goals and getting healthy!

13. Whose behavior made you appalled?
President Barack Obama

14. Where did most of your money go?
Nerd stuff, rent.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
New job and moving to Seattle.

16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
Not sure if there is any song in particular.  The Script – Science & Faith and Angels & Airwaves – Love Part II were my two favorite albums this year.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: happier or sadder?
Much happier.  Living the dream.. in Seattle.. still hard to believe.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Working out.. really want to get to my goal weight of around 180lbs.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Watch TV. Granted I really needed the detox time of zoning out. I definitely wasted a lot of time though.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
No working at the church this year.. yes!  Christmas Eve / Day was in Bremerton.  26th.. back to work!

21. How will you be spending New Years?
In Seattle with Andrea, Lee, Nathan and Matt.  Good time relaxing.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
I haven’t even caught up on TV shows for this season.. very strange for me.  Just haven’t had the time to be that lazy.  I think Flashpoint (season 4) was my all time favorite this year.  Though Suits is pretty epic as well.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I’m not really one for ‘hating’. There are people I prefer to avoid for various reasons.

26. What was the best book you read?
CCNA training materials?

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
To name a few Netsky, Ryan Starr, Royal Wood, Plug In Stereo and Playradioplay!… ok and maybe Justin Bieber.  I’ll admit it.  The kid has talent.

28. What did you want and got?
Pretty much everything. Haha. Consulting and full time job paid for a lot of toys this year.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Super8

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
25 this year. I don’t really remember exactly what went down. I have a horrible memory.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Lost more weight.. I got lazy due to life getting busy and then not getting back on track.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Hurley & Volcom shirts, jeans, etnies shoes, hoodie. Nothing exciting.

34. What kept you sane?
Music, blue skies and long drives.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Steve Jobs

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Ehh.. not one for politics.

37. Who did you miss?
Maggie, Gunnar & Grandma Lind.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Hmm.. I’ll have to give a shout out to Raelynn @ Hospice.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
Never Say Never.  Haha.  No really.  I never would have imagined that I would be in the job I am now.  The customers I get to work with is mind blowing.  Unfortunately, I can’t really list any but it’s legit.  Hard to believe that people in these organizations come to myself and my colleagues for help.  I have learned so much in my 3 months at EMC Isilon and while it may get stressful and busy.. it’s tons of fun.

Bring it on 2012!

What do I want?

Avoiding bed tonight laying on the living room floor thinking about what I really want in life. I think number one is to get down to my ideal healthy weight of 170-180. That’d be sweet. I have made some good progress but not enough. I’ve been off track for too long and it’s time to fix it. Though this is not a ‘new years resolution’.. I resolved a long time ago to never make them. Ha! It’s more like its time to just do it. Yes indeed!

While driving though the streets of downtown Seattle tonight, I was thinking about life. In particular, about how some people typically have their work life and their personal life. For most it seems like they have a decent separation between the two. For me though, it seems like I blend the two quite a bit. I am kind of thinking this is because, for me, work is not a job. It’s not something I just do to get paid. It. never has been and I so hope it never becomes that. For me.. work is my hobby.. aka.. technology, computers, helping people. It’s fun. It’s what I’m good at. It’s what I know. It’s my passion. And somehow, I found a ‘job’ where someone pays me to do what I love. Crazy right? I wonder if this is why I can find it hard to distinguish between work and personal. Just my thoughts for tonight.

Excessive napping

Today was a pretty good Christmas. Got to relax most of the day and even had Grandma Jo join us for a few hours. One benefit of holidays is the ability to nap. In my case.. my multiple naps today has led to sleep tonight being elusive at best. If I didn’t have to work in the morning this wouldn’t be a huge deal but, this time, I do. And 7 am is coming quickly. C’mon.. Let’s sleep.

My brain is wild with dreaming at the moment though. Thinking about what’s next for me. Where I want to go. What I want to achieve. Definitely on that list is continuing my progression to a healthier body and life. As things are finally starting to settle after a new job and moving.. the ability to get in a routine is near and I am really looking forward to it.. to have some consistency. Time to make some changes. I’m stoked. Let’s do this!

My last week @ newlife

I have tried to make it to everyone in person but I am inevitably going to miss someone. I thought I would post this on Facebook to try and grab anyone I have missed.

On December 21, 2010 I handed in my resignation to Peter. We had been planning it out for over a month but this was the day it became official. Sunday, January 9, 2011 was my last Sunday at newlife and I will be around the HUB during the week to wrap things up. This decision hasn’t come easy and has really been going back and forth over the past 6+ months. Ultimately, I am looking to further my career and ready for a new challenge and a new chapter in my life.

To answer a few questions:

I am leaving on good terms and completely by my choice. For me, I am good at media arts stuff (sound, media, video, etc.) and am REALLY good, passionate and in my sweet spot when it comes to IT (Information Technology: servers, networks, systems administration). I have wanted to purse my career in IT for a while and the timing just fell into place and I had a peace about starting the process.

I will still be living in Bremerton for the time being. At the moment my plan is to stick around through the lease Tyler and I have on the apartment which ends at the end of August. My goal is to move over to the Seattle side at some point… I have always wanted to live in a larger city with more culture. Seattle is perfect since it is so close and still keeps me a ferry ride away from family and friends.

I will be relying on my IT Consulting income for the time being. I have some really cool opportunities in Seattle and know people who know tons of people. I am really feeling comfortable about it.

While it would be nice to still attend newlife, I feel that I need to take a break and recuperate for a while. If I attend on a Sunday I think it will be too easy to get roped into tasks so for at least a month or two I am going to shy away from the Klahowya campus. I might visit some other campuses through this time or I might take a good break.. not sure just yet. I plan to make some trips to Seattle and check out some churches over there.. specifically Mars Hill. I have always wanted to make it over there and this is a perfect time.

My roles will be spread out over various staff and volunteers. The main points of contact will be Peter Blue for media arts and Jeff Davis for information technology.

It has been an absolute blast working with newlife. I started coming when our attendance was around 700 people and have been a part of us reaching an average of 2,300. Wow! I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of talented staff and volunteers that have made it an unforgettable experience.

I do plan on blogging again about life in general, lessons I’ve learned and updates on where I’m at. The official posts are on http://www.erictrudeau.com but Facebook automatically pulls them over within a day or so.

If you have any questions please do ask. Wishing you the best for 2011!

It’s 2011!

So I was browsing FaceBook one fine day and a friend from college did this cool thing where every year she answered the same set of questions. I thought it was a mighty fine idea and decided to steal it :) . Thanks Leslie aka “Sista”!

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?
Rock climbed with the newlife Klahowya team. Redid the network at Hospice with virtual servers and SonicWALL network equipment which was all pretty much new technology for me. Rebuilt the Audi’s transmission with my dad.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don’t really like making typical resolutions because I will just ignore them. I got out of debt so that was a big one.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nobody super close. Tons of people at newlife though!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Maggie Williamson. I had the honor of knowing her for just over 6 months at Hospice. Her life will forever have touched mine and will always make me take joy in life no matter what the circumstance. Maggie called herself handi-capable. Life definitely threw her a curve ball but she took it with such joy. She will be truly missed!

5. What countries did you visit?
Made it to Hermiston, OR during summer camp.. that was the farthest I got all year.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Genuine relationships with people. A date!

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
March 19 – Date I paid off my debt at Citi.
July 1 – My birthday party at Hospice which was the last time I saw Maggie.. when she sang me Happy Birthday in German?? which started off with ow, my knee! We all almost died of laughter.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting out of debt.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not getting into shape.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I had a pretty healthy year. Maybe a cold or two early in the year but that was it.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My laptop. Apple MacBook Pro 17” (Mid 2010). Most valuable purchase ever.
Second one would be my epic cabinets from IKEA which are all wired up with LED lighting and a ton of technology including 4TB of storage, a printer, and a battery backup. Yeah.. I’m a geek :) .

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Myself.. getting past my passive aggressiveism.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled?
Myself.. being passive aggressive.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Paying off debt, Taxes to Uncle Sam, stock market and laptop.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Paying off debt, new laptop.

16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
Iridescent by Linkin Park.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: happier or sadder?
Probably happier. 2009 ended with exhaustion.. moving out of the apartment in Silverdale. A lot of lessons learned there that I will never go through again. Moving back into my parents house was good (free rent) and bad (lack of independence).

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Spent time with people. Got into shape.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Watch TV. Granted I really needed the detox time of zoning out. I definitely wasted a lot of time though.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Well it’s over now but Christmas Eve was spent at newlife from 5p-2a. Then went home to sleep and had dinner at my parents. Great memories with Grandma Jo this year. Such a crack up!

21. How will you be spending New Years?
Eve was at Jenna’s house with Nathan. Watched some movies and had a good time. New Years day was at my parents playing cards with Darrel and Mary Jo.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Haha.. this is a tough one. I watched quite the collection of shows this year. To name a few: House, Chuck, Burn Notice, Blue Bloods, CSI x3, Community, Dexter, Big Bang Theory (thanks Nathan for getting me hooked!), Fringe, Human Target, Leverage, Lie to Me, NCIS x2, and of course Top Gear.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I’m not really one for ‘hating’. There are people I prefer to avoid for various reasons.

26. What was the best book you read?
Hmm.. well the only book I really read in 2010 was Soul Cravings by Erwin McManus. I read half of it a few years back. One day around October I was looking at my bookshelf and saw it. Picked it up and started off where I left off. It was exactly what I needed to hear.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Rush Coil’s 8-bit Christmas.
Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns.
Owl City & Port Blue.

28. What did you want and got?
Pretty much everything. Haha. Consulting paid for a lot of toys this year. The laptop would be #1.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Kick Ass

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
24 this year. I don’t really remember exactly what went down. I have a horrible memory.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Cut back on TV and spend more time with people. Make memories.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Hurley & Volcom shirts, jeans, etnies shoes. Nothing exciting.

34. What kept you sane?
Literally Iridescent by Linkin Park. That song came out during a really tough time and when I first heard it I started tearing up. It described exactly where I was at in life. That song provided me so much relief. The Audi was down for a few weeks while we replaced the heater core. I ended up borrowing my sister’s Impala and having the sound system in there to listen to this song with really helped me. Seems crazy but it was like a perfect situation even though it sucked to not have my car.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Not really my thing. I did some research on Warren Buffet and he seems like a pretty stand up guy.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The president and the so called health care reform. Oh and the ridiculous so called budget cuts. Yeah it sounds great when you say you are cutting millions from the budget but when we are aready billions over budget it doesn’t really matter does it now??

37. Who did you miss?
Maggie, Gunnar & Grandma Lind.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
This would actually be a group of people… the staff at Hospice of Kitsap County. Especially Kandee Jenson!!, Robin Jensen, Bev Hokkanen & Lisa Theobald. We have had so much fun together.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
Life is going to mess you up, throw you curve balls and ultimately try to drag you down. You choose how you respond to life. You can play victim and be all depressed but what good does that do. Choose joy. Maggie had gone through so much and I ALWAYS saw a smile on her face and she would always make me laugh with her crazy stories. I want to be like that.

Bring it on 2011!

Eric

Let’s try this again!

So I have decided it’s time to bring back the blog. I have been thinking about it for a long time and it’s time to start. This is not a New Years resolution because then I will just break it. This is for me and you have the honor of being able to read it.

I thought about removing all of the old stuff but I decided that this is kind of like my journal so that would just be crazy.

That’s all for now.

Eric

Mixer / Console Tape

Have you ever spent $15-20 for a roll of ‘mixer’ or ‘console’ tape.  I just did some browsing online and found the actual part number for the tape (thanks B&H for listing it) that is never labeled as to what it is.  You ready for this…

Shurtape Paper Tape P724 1″

I am considering getting the black one so we can trick out our mixer with black tape and silver sharpies.  haha.. I crack myself up.
